What to say

Long distance relationship messages

Long distance is not sustained by grand declarations. It is sustained by small, frequent, unremarkable contact, which is why the ordinary messages matter more than the romantic ones.

These are for the Tuesdays.

Ordinary days

  • Nothing happened today. Telling you anyway.
  • Good morning where you are, good night where I am.
  • I made the thing you taught me to make and it was fine, not yours.
  • Two weeks. I have started counting in a way I said I would not.

When the distance is heavy

  • Today the distance is not romantic, it is just far, and I wanted to say that out loud to you instead of pretending otherwise.
  • I am not having a doubt. I am having a bad Tuesday, and those are different things.
  • I would like to be in the same room as you for about an hour, that is all. Then I would be fine again.

Closing the gap

  • Booked. I will send you the times when I stop grinning at my phone.
  • Next month, same airport, same person waiting badly at arrivals.

Send it with flowers

Questions

How often should we message in a long distance relationship?

Frequency matters less than reliability. Small predictable contact beats long unpredictable bursts for almost everybody.

What can I send instead of a gift?

Anything that took your attention rather than your money: a voice note, a photograph of something ordinary, a bouquet with a note that could only have been written to them.
